Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

- Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
*SPOILER FREE
If I were to quote the most powerful line I heard in a romantic drama film in my life it'd probably be this: "I have so much strength in me you have no idea. I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine." said by the most insecure, fragile, and socially anxious man who's been bullied by everyone his entire life. This is PTA's abstract symbolic masterpiece Punch-Drunk Love.
In this cinematic art mixture of writing, camera work, set design, music, color, performance, and Montage we follow emotionally isolated, sexually frustrated entrepreneur Barry Egan on his journey to salvation. The only male among eight siblings, Barry embarks upon a bizarre sequence of events, and meets a lady who is going to change his life and love forever.
Depending on what you're in for, this is the type of film that you either love so much or hate so much. This is not your typical comedy romance of two awkward individuals who come together to free one another from their loneliness and irrelevance at the end. This is an authentic attempt to illustrate one's real life psychology and identity transformation. This character study by one of the Hollywood's best filmmakers working today is a delightful cathartic artwork that proves itself as a 21st century classic.
Adam Sandler gives the best performance of his career, still is after twenty years, and I am going to say this, and makes his entry as one of the best actors in cinema history. If you are open-jaw-ingly chocked by this, and only familiar with the lovable goofball Adam Sandler, do yourself a favor and check out this unconventional outstanding performance.
