"As far as I can remember..." I always loved criminal biopics. And as far as I know they don't get any better than this.
Goodfellas is biographical crime-drama set between 1955-1980 and following mob associate, Henry Hill, his rise and fall in the criminal scene of his Italian-American neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.
This is a story of aspiration and desperation, a story of rise and fall, and a story of family, a different kind of family, this is a story of loyalty and betrayal.
Martin Scorsese, who just gave another ingenious biopic The Irishman, sits on top of the world of cinema and storytelling as an old-school master.
Top-notch writing and direction, haunting cinematography, exhilarating one-shot scenes, compelling narration, and engaging music.
Robert De Niro - at the peak of, arguably, the best actor-director collaboration in cinema history with Scorsese - pushes the bar even farther and seamlessly steels the show at everything he does.
Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta give the performances of their careers. They're funny and they're terrifying, especially that those legendary unpredicted sequences of Tommy DeVito.
Goodfellas was the main inspiration for David Chase to create my favorite, and what I believe to be the greatest, television show of all time, The Sopranos.
Having gained cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance, Goodfellas is one of the greatest films ever made, a true masterpiece of cinema.
Honorable mentione: The Irishman (2019)
