"I gotta tell you, the life of the mind ... There's no road map for that territory ... and exploring it can be painful. The kind of pain most people don't know anything about." Look upon me! I'll show you the life of the mind!
Barton Fink is a black-comedy psychological thriller-drama set in 1941 and follows up-and-coming Broadway playwright, Barton Fink, as he's moving to Los Angeles to write scripts for a film studio. He embarks on a bizarre sequence of events that leads him into a writer's block.
This is a homage to those hustling, creative minds out there, the common man, and the film-noir era of Hollywood.
The Coen Brothers at the peak of their four-decade festive career stole the show with not only some of the better black comedies of the 1990s but of the century.
The symbolism in Barton Fink is raw, surreal, and poetic. This is a cinema for the mind where you are invited into the artist's world of imagination, paradox, and dream-like nature.
John Turturro as Barton Fink (for whom the script was specifically written) and John Goodman as Charlie Meadows pull off such captivating performances. This is a work of art and genius before the camera and behind it.
Top-notch screenwriting, compelling acting, and masterful cinematography by Coen Brothers' usual, Roger Deakins.
Barton Fink is a arthouse, thought-provoking masterpiece of filmmaking about filmmaking and those who go to the edge of madness for its sake.
