Dancer in the Dark

*SPOILER FREE

In a musicals, nothing dreadful ever happens!

Dancer in the Dark is a musical drama set in 1964 Washington State and follows Selma, a Czech immigrant who has moved to the United States with her 12-year-old son, Gene. Selma suffers a degenerative eye condition that causes her to gradually lose her vision and must save enough money to pay for an operation that will prevent Gene from suffering her fate.

This is a tale of a woman, a mom who loves life and loves her son. This is a heartbreaking melodrama for those who daydream, for those who dance in the dark.

This is a kind of film that you cannot believe until you have seen it. Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier creates a world of magic and heartbreak and throws you to dance in the middle. This is the cinema that isn't bounded by rules, this is the cinema of the hearts.

Shooting on location and using hand-held cameras and the Dogme inspired look gave the film atmospheric dimensions for the unconventional narrative.

Björk takes hold of your heart and emotions for the entirety of her presence on the screen as the daydreaming Selma who's in love with the musicals. And the musical sequences, that she wrote herself, couldn't be more powerful and captivating.

Dancer in the Dark is an emotional ride of cinema for those who dare to dance in the dark.
