"I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger. Traveling through this world below..."
1917 is a war drama set on April 6, 1917 during WWI and follows British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, on their mission to deliver important orders to a battalion behind the enimy lines in time to save 1600 soldiers, including Blake's brother, from a deadly trap.
Inspired by the true experiences of the director's grandfather in WWI this is a story about humanity, friendship, sacrifice, and heroism. This is cinematic journey where - just like life - the only way to go is forward.
Not only did visionary Sam Mendes depict the destruction and chaos of war through his two main characters going across no-man's land, he had his viewer go along with them as they were the third, experiencing what they are experiencing, their vulnerability, their pains, and their triumphs.
Only few 21st century pictures were as committed as this gorgeously shot motion picture by the best living American cinematographer, Roger Deakins. Filmed to look like a one-continuous-shot to intimately immerse its audience in the dreadful, heart-wrenching, and climactic story.
Tomas Newman score plays an essential role in the emotional narrative that it's almost a character on its own conveying the emotions that other characters cannot.
Exhilarating production and art design, mind-blowing camera work, and outstanding performances led by rising acting talents, especially that of George Mackay, all of which we meet in real time and as real people.
Experiencing 1917 on the biggest screen possible, with the best audio setup, and in one sitting without a single pause is crucially recommended.
1917 is a genius work of art and storytelling, a beautiful and exceptional cinematic achievement, simple in its story and out of the world in its execution.
