Hiroshima, my love... Nevers, Mon Amour... Hiroshima Mon Amour.
Hiroshima Mon Amour is a romantic drama set in Hiroshima after about a decade of the atomic bombing and follows a French actress, who's in the city to shoot an anti-war film, and a Japanese architect as they engage in an brief, intense affair and speak their hearts to one another.
This is a melancholic masterpiece of cinema about an impossible love at the impossible time in the impossible place. This is poem of love in a time defined by war.
Alain Resnais in his debut feature completes - what I like to call - the French New Wave trinity, alongside Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Godard's Breathless, Resnais pioneered and originated the dawn of a new era of cinema.
The French-Japanese was intended to be a documentary about the nuclear bomb catastrophe in Hiroshima before Alain Resnais later decided to add the fictional element to it. You can see both vibes coming together in harmony in this final version.
The haunting cinematography, mesmerizing music, and intimate aspect ratio give the film warmth and depth from the opening scene until the closing credits.
Hiroshima Mon Amour is a landmark of world cinema that made a way for a generation of filmmakers and film art.
