Some say "fair" is a man-made concept, then why? Why should we even bother trying to obtain worth and significance? Why should we try to change the wheel of bittersweet time?
Nights of Cabiria is a romantic drama following Cabiria, a dreamy prostitute wandering the streets of Rome looking for true love.
This is an exploration of the hustle of the pursuit of relevance and status, an ode to nightlife culture and the underdog, a poem of desperation and heartbreak.
Cabiria is the everywoman, rebellious at heart, an open-book that aspires for a happy ending. Played gracefully by Giulietta Masina (Fellini's wife) who embodies our unorthodox protagonist in one of the finest character study in cinema.
Federico Fellini composes a symphonic work of art that inspired and changed the way I perceive and process storytelling as an art form forever. Nights of Cabiria was a turning point in Fellini's own life as a master of filmmaking and storytelling creating the better cinema of the 20th century.
Nino Rota, once again, hooks you on an emotional ride with his masterful score and sets the tone for the sensational narrative from the opening to the unconventional climatic ending.
Like most of the Italian neorealism, this is about the fragile, innocent, and platonic human beneath the layers of wickedness and foxiness that are shaped by despairing circumstances and unfulfilled needs. This is about the pain and hope of finding a meaning at a time defined by the lack thereof.
65 years later, Nights of Cabiria remains resonant and enchanting, and an exquisite masterpiece of world cinema.
