Le Grand Amour (1969) - (France)

Co-written and directed by (and starting) Pierre Étaix

*SPOILER FREE

What is true love and where can one find it? Do we find it or it finds us? And is it in the heart or is it in the trousers?

Le Grand Amour is a romantic comedy following Pierre, a 25-year old playboy who gets married out of circumstance, years later he's having a midlife crisis and fantasizing about another young girl.

This is a surreal examination of the paradox of love, a satire on marriage and extramarital venturing when the upper body is conflicted with the lower.

The French film is lighthearted and moderate between its comic playfulness and its 'aha' moments that seamlessly reflect on the viewer.

Filmmaker Pierre Étaix, who also plays our hopeless leading character, ambitiously highlight the scene of love and the social dilemma around it in 20th century Europe.

Set and released in the late 1960s, this work of fiction and realism is very relevant today.

Le Grand Amour is a delightful piece of cinema that doesn't take itself very seriously yet dares to ask humanity's most complex questions.
