Inside Out (2015)

- Co-written (story by) and co-directed by Pete Docter
*SPOILER FREE
Pixar: what if there was a way to enter one's brain and have an on-ground look at the mechanism and defining feature of our human existence?
Pete Docter: well, that's an idea!
Inside Out is a fantasy comedy family-drama set in the mind of an 11-year old Riley and follows the five core emotions (joy, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger) that administrate her thoughts, feelings, and actions as Riley is trying to cope with her family's moving from Minnesota to San Francisco.
This is a voyage into the headquarters of the human mind, its conscious and subconscious, a curious quest to understand the unique inner operations that characterize what we are as individuals.
Genius filmmaker and animator Pete Docter knew best how to make a film that brings the young and the adult together and keeps them both equally invested and mesmerized. He creates a cinema of wonder that respects the mind of its viewer and leaves them blown away from the inside out.
Pixar upgrades to a whole new level of animated perfection with more complex characters, world building, and narrative. The 20-year old (then) studio is now mature enough to shoot and even go to the stars creating exquisitely inventive animation and exquisitely magical cinema.
5 years later Docter would go on and craft another insightful gemstone, Soul, depicting the human experience from the perspective of, yep! you guessed it, the soul.
Inside Out is an ideal combination of art and entertainment for all members of the family, an exuberant piece of visual storytelling of 21st century cinema.
Honorable mention: Soul (2020)
