What is death, what does it mean when someone dies? Is it the end of a life or the beginning of another? And what are we after we die, what are we to those who we depart?

Departures is a Japanese drama following Daigo, a young Cellist who just lost his job after his orchestra is disbanded. He start a new job as a nōkanshi, a traditional Japanese ritual mortician who prepare the dead for funerals, despite the discrimination of society against such rituals.

This is a meditation on death, a poem of the ultimate departure, a melancholic symphony played by the instrument of death.

A heartfelt story of family and caring, love and hope, society and taboos, inner transformation and spirituality that you can touch.

They say action speaks louder than words, I say music speaks louder than both. The music in this film, especially the moving Cello melody, transcends both life and death, a heartwarming and captivating soundtrack that kindly takes hold of your heart for long after watching the film. Composed and orchestrated by Japanese legendary, the sensational Joe Hisaishi.

Departures is beautiful masterpiece and an essential cinematic experience for everyone before their departure.
